While no Michiganders won the Powerball jackpot last week — the lucky winner bought a ticket in California — the Mega Millions jackpot leaves lottery draw game players with another chance at big winnings. After nobody won the jackpot Friday, Tuesday’s Mega Millions jackpot has grown to an estimated $820 million.
If someone wins Tuesday, it’ll be the fifth-largest jackpot victory in Mega Millions history. An Oakland lottery club won the Mega Millions in 2021, winning a jackpot of more than $1 billion. That remains the largest jackpot won by a Michigan customer.
Playing the Mega Millions isn’t complicated, as a customer only needs to select six numbers (or have the numbers randomly generated) to create a valid ticket. Mega Millions tickets can be purchased for $2 any time prior to 10:45 p.m. the day of the drawing, and Mega Millions drawings occur every Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m. To win the jackpot, a customer’s ticket must match all six numbers drawn.
While playing is easy, winning may feel impossible — there’s a reason nobody nationwide has won the jackpot since April. The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302.6 million.
Michigan customers can buy tickets at lottery retailers across the state or online.
$1 million winner
If a Mega Millions player matches the first five numbers but not the sixth and final ball, they win a $1 million prize. That was the case for one fortunate Michigan customer Friday who won $1 million in the most recent Mega Millions drawing. That winning ticket was purchased at Hunter and Wayne Liquor Store in Westland.
The $1 million matches the largest Mega Millions winning ticket in Michigan in 2023, with another customer having won $1 million in March.
There have been six Mega Millions jackpot winners nationwide in 2023, with the Northeast seemingly owning all the luck this year. Three of the winners purchased tickets in New York, two bought tickets in Massachusetts, and one winner bought a ticket in Maine.
