I’m a dog guy. Not a cat guy. Cats are dumb. The only cat I ever liked was Elektra, who lived in the apartment upstairs from me for a few years. He was midnight black and mostly an outdoor cat, but he took a shine to me for some unknown reason.

I’d get home, he’d come bounding in from the woods — every day. He’d come up to me, I’d pet him for a minute or two, he’d follow me into my apartment, he’d pretty much just hang for a few, and then he’d nose up to the door and that was that.

Cool cat. Probably was a dog in a past life.

Despite my anti-cat stance, I decided to give Cornelius, an online casino cat, a try. Exclusive to BetMGM, Cornelius is a fat cat, drawn to be reminiscent of a late 1970s cartoon that never was, you know? Far out.

Anyway, here we are: a slot game featuring an overweight cartoon cat. Shall we?

The facts

Coming at you from NetENT, this 5×4 slot features 1,024 ways to win a very healthy 96.96 RTP. You’re not going to get rich playing this game, but you’re not going to lose the entire kitty, pun very much intended, thank you very much.

Collect the same symbols in three or more rows from left to right, win some dough. But the real money comes in the bonus games.

The first one is the “cash drop.” Get three or more — you’ll know them because they will have a monetary value attached to them — and you’re in the cash drop. It’s a little convoluted, so I’ll try my best to explain.

For starters, despite being in what seems like a bonus game, you’re still spinning the wheel of the regular game at whatever price point you started at. So know that. Secondly, each money symbol will literally drop down the reel as the spins continue. So if there’s a $1 symbol at the top, it will be there for each successive spin until it falls off the bottom, and you’ll win the dollar — minus the cost of the spin — each time.

Furthermore, you get three spins to try to get another money symbol. If you do, the spins start anew.

As you collect money, it turns into food (don’t ask) and goes into Cornelius’ bowl. Once you exhaust the spins, Cornelius chows down. So that’s fun.

The other bonus is the free spins feature. It’s similar to the cash drop, except A) you don’t have to pay for your spins and B) there are more features besides the cash symbols, notably the “up” and “golden up” feature, which pushes up and locks the money in place, as well as an “adder” and a “multiplier” symbol which — one guess — adds and/or multiplies your winnings.

You can buy your way into the free spins feature for 100X your bet.

Look and feel

Frankly, the theme is dopey. There’s a lazy, fat, happy cartoon cat cavorting on the left of the screen. He’s easily distracted by butterflies and birds, but he’s clearly hungry and wants you to fill his bowl. He’ll burp now and again.

There’s background music, pleasant enough, kind of derpy.

Listen — it’s a cartoon cat and you can spin for as little as 20 cents. So there ya go.

The results

I hit the cash drop feature twice, but you don’t really make a ton of money on the deal — mostly because you have to pay for the spins.

I didn’t unlock the free spins feature, but this Cornelius cat fella plays a psychological game, as I must’ve gotten two scatter symbols on every 10th spin or so. Close, but no sardine. (Do cats like sardines? I’m guessing so, but who knows.)

Overall, it’s one of the more pleasant and goofy online slots you’ll come across. Three out of four whiskers.
